The Book of the Consulate of the Sea or Book of the Consulate of Sea'','' is a compendium of maritime law that ruled for centuries the trade in Mediterranean. Of Catalan origin, it was translated into many languages and has served as the basis for the current international maritime law. When setting the first Consulate of the Sea in Valencia, the king Peter III of Aragon decided to apply the maritime uses and customs of Barcelona, called ''costums de mar''; which had not been coded yet, though it existed in Barcelona another compilation of maritime rules called '' Ordinacions de Ribera'', which were some sort of what today would be called'' Harbour and coastal waters police norms .〔'' The merit of the Book of the Consulate of the Sea is that it is the first work that collects scattered laws and customs of the Roman, Greek, Byzantine, rhodium, Italian, French and Catalan maritime rights''.〔'' Until the writing of '' the Ordonnance de la Marine '' in France on 1681,〔(forward - propos.pdf maritime Code. ''Before its compilation what was used as "Maritime Code" were the Amalfi Tables, which were a set of rules written in Amalfi to regulate the maritime trade,〔(Maritime law history )〕 those tables were replaced by the Book of the Consulate of the Sea. ==Influence and impact == The expansion and commercial and maritime supremacy of the Crown of Aragon, with the Consulates of the Sea throughout Europe, meant that the compilation of maritime law, known by the name of '' Book of the Consulate of the Sea '' crossed borders across the Mediterranean and up towards the Atlantic. The ''Book of the Consulate of the Sea'', prepared on the basis of the Mediterranean maritime customs, was inspired by the maritime customs of Barcelona, and was perfected in the Valencia Consulate of the Sea .〔 Originally written in Catalan, the Book of the Consulate of the Sea was tranlated to the Italian, French, English, Castilian and other languages, and for centuries was the basis of the merchant marine legislation in many countries, even in modern times. The book has as an annex with the Barcelona's ordinances of 1435 on marine insurances, which were the first known to the world, and the wide circulation of the book helped spread these ordinances.〔 With the Nueva Planta decrees (1707 - 1716) were suppressed all Consulates of the Sea in the Crown of Aragon, except in Mallorca and Barcelona. The latter did not usually act by the interference with the Bourbon laws. The rules of the Book of the Consulate of the Sea were active in Spain until 1829, when they were replaced by the Spanish code of commerce, inspired in the French law.
